“Every child is an artist. The challenge is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Allan Irvine was born in Irvine, Scotland. From a very young age he showed artistic talent and an eye for color and shape, outdoing his older brother and sister in modelling plasticine and childhood sketches. Although he has never formally trained as an artist, art has continued to be a constant pursuit in Allan's life and has featured in some way in all of his endeavours. Early work took the form of portraits and contemporary subjects influenced by impressionism. More recently he has focussed on landscapes but with modern twists of colour.

He lives in the Western Highlands where he manages a local estate and lives in a spot that affords him magnificent views of the local landscape and sky. In this recent work, Allan is not only bringing in vibrant colours which show the drama and inherent beauty of the landscape around him, but he is experimenting with shaped wooden canvases. These wooden panels give depth to these dramatic landscapes, drawing the eye of the viewer in. They act like a door or window on to these landscapes giving the work, at times, an almost surreal or super-real effect.

A well as painting Allan makes wooden sculptures and has recently added wood turning to his portfolio. Recycling is part of life living in the country side and this can be seen with Allan's latest wooden vases and candle holders made from old oak fence posts.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
